Parentage Analysis Reveals Unequal Family Sizes during Hatchery Production

Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) is a species of conservation concern that has been stocked in several Great Lakes (North America) rivers. were extirpated the Ontonagon River Superior and stocking began 1998. In 2017, gametes collected from spawning lake (9 females, 36 males) caught at nearby Sturgeon ground, generating nine family groups using 1:4 mating design (n = 862). 2018, 3 females 15 males, three groups, additional collections drifting fry reared hatchery, resulting 84 hatchery-produced 675 wild-caught for River. The objective this study was to compare paternal representation genetic diversity between two strategies. Parentage analysis based on data 12 microsatellite loci determined none hatchery had equal (p < 0.001), while wild-produced offspring representation. Despite larger number breeders contributing larvae, there no significant difference larvae representative offspring.
